4 Ways to Celebrate and Honor Dr. King’s Lessons of Peace and Love on MLK Day

Each January, the nationally observed MLK Day holiday brings another opportunity to teach young children about the important civil rights work Dr. Martin Luther King accomplished in his lifetime and his dream of creating an equitable and just world. Your very young children may not be ready to fully understand all of the details around the civil rights movement just yet but they are never too young to learn some core messages inspired by Dr. King’s work: that everyone should be treated the same regardless of their race, gender or other differences and with kindness and love.

While Dr. King’s dream was unfulfilled in his lifetime, we can do our best to teach and inspire future generations to make it a reality. Hopefully, many early childhood education and care programs, Pre-K programs and schools celebrate the MLK Day with age-appropriate and meaningful books, discussions, and activities. We encourage moms and dads to further reinforce the significance of the holiday by talking at home with their children about why equity and kindness matter, how Dr. King influenced these ideals, and by doing activities as a family that support these teachings.

MLK Day happens on the third Monday of January every year. Check out our ideas below to help your family celebrate the holiday this year.
